How often should you replace your struts?

how often should you replace your struts

If you're a drier, you might be wondering how often should you replace your struts.

Over 90% of Americans own and drive cars, a necessity for travel today. With the freedom that they bring, they're a symbol of young adulthood among Americans.

But just like us, they require care and attention; sometimes, you'll have to replace their components. A couple of car components you need to pay special attention to are your struts and automotive shocks. Struts and shocks are critical because they keep your tires in constant contact with the road.

How often should you replace your struts? The lifespan of struts can vary depending on several factors, including driving styles, vehicle make and model, and the quality of the struts themselves. In general, manufacturers often recommend replacing struts every 50K to 100K miles. However, it's essential to keep in mind that these are general guidelines, and actual replacement intervals may differ.

Here are some signs that your struts may need replacement:

  1. Poor Ride Quality: If you notice a significant decrease in ride comfort, such as an increased bouncing ride, it may indicate worn-out struts.
  2. Leaking Fluid: Inspect for any signs of oil or hydraulic fluid leaking from the strut assembly. Fluid leakage can be a clear indicator that the strut is failing.
  3. Uneven Tire Wear: Worn-out struts can lead to uneven tire wear. If you observe uneven tread wear on your tires, it could be a sign of suspension problems.
  4. Noise: A knocking noise when going over bumps or uneven surfaces may recommend an issue with the struts.
  5. Handling Problems: If your vehicle's handling feels less responsive or if there is increased body sway during turns, it could be due to worn struts.

It's important to consult your vehicle's manual for specific recommendations regarding the replacement interval for your particular make and model. Additionally, if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, it's advisable to have your vehicle checked by a qualified mechanic who can assess the condition of your struts and recommend any compulsory replacements. Regular maintenance and prompt replacement of worn-out parts contribute to the overall safety and performance of your vehicle.

What are the symptoms of bad automotive shocks?

what are the symptoms of bad automotive shocks

Automotive Shocks are a crucial component of any vehicle's suspension system. They ensure a smooth and stable ride, providing optimal control and handling even on the roughest roads. Automotive Shocks are designed to last for many years, but wear and tear on the components can cause them to fail over time.

When this happens, it's important to be aware of any symptoms indicating that your automotive shocks are no longer functioning properly. This could include decreased handling and braking performance, increased wear and tear on other suspension components, reduced tire grip, damage to the car axles and stability, and reduced passenger comfort. In this article, we'll explore what are the symptoms of bad automotive shocks and the potential consequences of driving with them.

Symptoms Of Bad Automotive Shocks

  1. Poor steering response Poor steering response is often a sign of bad automotive shocks. This is because bad automotive shocks can cause the steering to feel loose or unresponsive, making it difficult to control the vehicle. The automotive shocks also help stabilize the vehicle, so when they are not working properly, it can decrease control and alignment of the car axles.
  2. Uneven tire wear Bad Automotive shocks cause your tires to wear as they cannot be properly planted on the road, making them bounce and wear unevenly. This demonstrates the need for quality automotive shocks to keep your tires in good condition.
  3. Vibrations or rattling noises Bad Automotive shocks can cause annoying or unsettling vibrations or rattling noises when driving on bumpy or rough roads. The vibrations can be felt throughout the vehicle, and the rattling noise can become increasingly loud, interrupting the smooth ride expected from well-maintained automotive shocks. The noises and vibrations can make driving less safe, impeding control over the steering and stability of the vehicle.

Consequences Of Driving With Bad Automotive Shocks

  1. Reduced handling and braking performance Bad Automotive shocks reduce the dampening effect between the tires and the road, making it harder to steer and stop the vehicle. This reduces the vehicle's overall performance, making it more difficult to handle and increasing the risk of an accident.
  2. Decreased tire grip and stability Bad Automotive shocks can decrease the contact between the tires and the road, causing them to lose grip and stability, reducing traction, and increasing the risk of accidents.
  3. Reduced comfort for passengers Driving with bad Automotive shocks can be uncomfortable for passengers and make concentrating difficult, increasing the risk of accidents. It can cause tiredness, sore muscles, and awkward vibrations.

You may asking, “Do I need to Replace Struts?”

do I need to replace struts

Whether your car has struts or automotive shocks, they are an important part of its suspension system. In a vehicle with a strut-type suspension, the struts are the “shock absorbers” mounted inside coil springs. They replace other types of automotive shocks, and they are usually used because they make suspension systems more affordable. They control the amount of bouncing created by bumps, dips, and peaks in the road and making a hard.

So you may be asking, “Do I need to replace struts?”  Normally, struts don’t need to be replaced.  Though, struts can wear out.  The more you carry heavy loads or drive on rough roads, the faster the struts will wear, but they often last the life of a vehicle if you don’t abuse them.

If your vehicle is bouncing up and down overly, or it bottoms out in potholes and over bumps, leaking fluid, or have become damaged, schedule a thorough checkup of the suspension system to find the source of the issue.  Bushings and other parts in the suspension, such as tie rods, control arms, and sway-bar links, can also wear out and cause loose steering, noise over bumps and more body lean in turns. Improper wheel alignment and uneven tire wear could also cause some of these issues.
